(COLUMBUS) - The Multiethnic Advocates for Cultural Competence (MACC) is pleased to announce the selection of Charleta Tavares as its Executive Director effective April 3, 2006. In this new role, Charleta will oversee the organization’s strategic direction and work to infuse Cultural Competence into Ohio’s Behavioral Heath Care System and those other systems that serve some of the state’s most vulnerable populations.
MACC is blessed to have such an experienced and committed leader as Charleta in this role and welcomes the new energy she will bring to this most important work” says Mataryun “Mo” Wright, Interim Executive Director and President of a local consulting firm.

In addition to her new role with MACC, Ms. Tavares will continue to serve as a member of the Columbus City Council which she has done since 1999. Tavares’ state and national reputation as a leader in the areas of health and human services was instrumental in her appointment to serve as the Chair of the Council’s Health, Housing, and Human Services Committee. In addition, she serves on the Finance, Development, Public Service, Rules and Reference and Zoning Committees.
Prior to joining Council, Tavares left a legacy for the citizens of Ohio during her 5 ½ year tenure in the Ohio General Assembly as the State Representative in the 22nd House District. Tavares was the first African-American woman ever to hold a leadership position in the Ohio General Assembly (Minority Whip). Charleta has also previously served as Chief of the Children’s Protection Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, a position where she played a leadership role in developing and advocating for policy and legislative initiatives to protect the health, safety, education and security of Ohio’s Children.
With Charleta’s selection, MACC begins a new chapter in our development and looks forward to jointly working to ensure that Cultural Competence remains at the forefront of the Behavioral Health Care agenda of Ohio” said Paul Dorn, MACC Board of Directors Chair.
