start the right conversation about substance abuse, addiction, and Mental health

MACC Executive Director, Erica Crawley, discusses how to Start the Right Conversation with your family, friends, and loved ones.

A simple conversation, a patient ear, or a moment of understanding can bring warmth where it’s needed most—especially when someone you love is struggling with mental health and/or substance use.

When concerns come up, many supporters feel stuck between two fears: saying the wrong thing, or saying nothing at all.  Start The Right Conversation is here to make that first step feel more possible—by offering practical, stigma-free guidance rooted in care, respect, and real-life family situations.

This campaign is designed to help families, friends, and community members approach difficult topics with compassion and clarity—while keeping connection at the center. You don’t need perfect words or professional training to start. What matters most is showing up with patience, listening without judgment, and staying steady over time.

As we continue this campaign into 2026, MACC will share more tools and learning opportunities to support families and loved ones, including downloadable resources, conversation tips, and community-based events that encourage follow-through and connection to support.
